CenGen joined the Howard County Economic Development Authority’s (HCEDA) NeoTech Incubator in 2004 with 10 employees; now ready to graduate, the company has provided jobs for more than 300 workers since then in full-time, part-time and temporary jobs.

Recently acquired by a major defense contractor, CenGen specializes in wireless and mobile communication technologies for applications in defense, intelligent transportation systems and first responder communication programs. It’s wireless and mobile communication technologies are focused on meeting the needs of low echelon units working in disruptive and bandwidth constrained environments.

CenGen has provided fielding and test support, as well as system integration on Department of Defense communications systems. The company has a national reputation for providing decision-makers in government and industry with expertise in network planning, design and implementation.

Mobern’s Shining Light Spans Decades

Established in 1944, Mobern Lighting Co. has been a designer/manufacturer of a wide range of industrial/commercial, state-of-the-art, energy-efficient lighting fixtures and solutions.

Presently located in a 140,000-square-foot plant on Route 1 in Laurel, Mobern began serving Howard County in 1957. It has doubled its workforce and increased sales by more than 100% during the course of the last 12 months. This growth is mainly attributable to local projects with Maryland institutions, government agencies (federal and state) and commercial/industrial building owners.

Recently, Mobern identified and supplied energy efficient lighting solutions for the Maryland Sports Authority (Oriole Park at Camden Yards), BWI Thurgood Marshall Airport, Howard County Government, NSA and Fort Meade, among other entities. Each of these projects featured the company’s in-house design, engineering and flexible manufacturing operations, setting the stage for energy -and cost-efficiency.

In addition, major lighting manufacturers have contracted with Mobern to produce home-grown, American-made products to supplement existing product lines that were once manufactured abroad.
